Design Friday: Zero energy goes multifamily

We’ve written about zero-energy homes in the past, but here’s a project that surpasses even the most extreme single-family home project.

Spring Leaf, currently under construction in Boulder will be one of the of the nation’s first multifamily net-zero-energy developments. Built on infill, it draws on solar and geothermal energy and features sustainable building products and healthy interiors.

The project will offer twelve custom-designed homes that will exceed LEED-Platinum certification. Each home will offer up to 2,700 square feet of sustainable living. Oriented for maximum passive solar exposure, the project will produce electricity using photovoltaic (PV) cells. Homes are heated and cooled by heat pumps that draw on geothermal energy from the earth. With highly energy-efficient building systems and materials, the homes are tight, comfortable, and well-designed.
